Resolving Errors When Creating Events: HubSpot Marketing Event Property Customization

This article walks you through what causes the issue and how to resolve it by updating your property settings in HubSpot.

If you're encountering an error when trying to create an event in SimpleEvents.io, it may be due to customizations made to HubSpot’s default Marketing Event properties—specifically the Organizer or Type fields. 

 The Issue

SimpleEvents.io relies on specific values in HubSpot's default Marketing Event properties:

If you or your team has changed either of these properties from their original configuration—especially by converting them into Dropdown Select fields—you will likely see an error during event creation.

How to Fix It

To ensure compatibility with SimpleEvents.io, you need to add our required options to the dropdown lists of the affected properties.

Step 1: Check if Properties Are Dropdowns

  1. Go to your HubSpot account.

  2. Navigate to Settings → Properties.

  3. Search for the Marketing Event object.

  4. Locate the Organizer and Type properties.

  5. If either property is now set as a Dropdown Select, continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Add the Required Dropdown Options

    • Conference/Trade Show
    • Hybrid
    • Onsite - In Person
    • Offsite - In Person
    • Virtual

These values must match exactly (including casing and spacing) in order for event creation to work correctly.

Best Practices

  • Avoid removing or renaming default options unless you are certain of the downstream impact.

  • Restrict dropdown customizations on system properties if you're actively using SimpleEvents.io.

  • If needed, create custom properties for internal tracking and leave the original ones as-is.
